Strong Bodies, Confident Kids: How to Keep Your Child Active This Summer

By , Founder of ZENTAI Martial ArtsPublished Updated 4 min read

    The Quick Answer

Keep kids active in summer by building movement into every day: outdoor play, playgrounds, bike rides, swimming, and at least one structured activity that develops balance, coordination, strength, and agility. Mix free play with organized classes or camps, limit long screen stretches, and move with your child. Active summers support better mood, sleep, focus, and confidence heading into the school year.

When I was older, we had a small dog named Tiger. A seven-pound Yorkie. Every time the mailman pushed mail through the door, Tiger went absolutely crazy. He'd grab the mail and tear it up like there was a wolf living in our house.

I also had a friend who trained protection dogs. He had a pit bull named Ace. Huge dog. And every time I saw Ace, he was completely relaxed. Loud noise? He'd glance over, then look away.

In my book, Built to Lead, I explain the difference. Tiger barked because he was afraid. He knew he couldn't handle a real threat, so he had to act tough. Ace knew exactly what he was capable of. So he didn't need to prove anything.

I see the same thing in kids.

A child who trusts their body carries themselves differently. They stand taller. They try new things. They don't need to show off, and they don't shrink back. That kind of calm confidence doesn't come from a pep talk. It comes from a body that has been challenged, again and again, and handled it.

And summer is one of the best times to build it.

Why Is Physical Activity So Important for Kids?

Movement isn't just about burning off energy. It's the foundation for a lot of other growth. In Built to Lead, I describe the body as the foundation of the Whole Self. When it's strong, everything built on top of it, the mind, the heart, the soul, and the spirit, has something solid to stand on.

    Regular physical activity helps kids:

    • Build motor skills like balance, coordination, strength, and agility
    • Sleep better and wake up with more energy
    • Feel better, since exercise releases endorphins, the brain's natural feel-good chemicals
    • Focus better when it's time to sit and learn
    • Make friends through play and teamwork
    • Build confidence by doing things their body couldn't do before

What Motor Skills Should My Child Be Working On?

Kids develop best when they get a wide variety of movement, not just the same activity over and over. Here are the building blocks:

    • Hand-eye and foot-eye coordination: catching, throwing, kicking a ball, hitting a target
    • Balance: standing on one foot, walking a line, hopping
    • Strength: climbing, crawling, carrying, pushing and pulling
    • Agility: changing direction quickly, dodging, stopping and starting
    • Body awareness and movement senses: rolling, spinning, swinging, and tumbling help kids learn where their body is in space and how to keep their balance

A lot of these come naturally through free play, like climbing a tree or rolling down a hill. We sometimes limit them in the name of safety, and safety matters. But kids also need safe chances to challenge their balance and test their limits.

Easy Ways to Keep Kids Active All Summer

    1. Get outside every day. Parks, playgrounds, backyards, and sidewalks. Unstructured outdoor play is powerful.
    2. Try something new each week. Swimming, biking, hiking, jumping rope, hopscotch. Variety builds a wider range of skills.
    3. Build an obstacle course. Pillows to crawl over, a line to balance on, a target to kick. Kids love designing their own.
    4. Add one structured activity. A camp or class with a coach gives kids skill progression they can't get from free play alone.
    5. Trade screen time for move time. Try a simple rule: move first, screens later.
    6. Join in. Race them, play catch, take a class together. Kids are far more likely to stay active when you are too.

How ZENTAI Builds Strong Bodies and Strong Character

At ZENTAI Martial Arts, we are a leadership development academy that uses martial arts as the vehicle. At our 4 New Jersey locations in Belleville, Clifton, Hackensack, and North Arlington, and our location in the Dominican Republic, every kids class runs on the ZENTAI SKILLZ child development curriculum, which builds age-appropriate physical skills alongside focus, confidence, and teamwork.

    • Summer Camp. ZENTAI Summer Camp keeps kids moving, learning, and making friends during the long summer days. You'll find the details on the Summer Camp page at zentai.us.
    • Skills matched to each age. Early Skillz (ages 3 to 4) works on kicking, blocking, crawling, hopping, rolling, running, and catching. Basic Skillz (5 to 6) builds balance, coordination, control, and fitness. Older groups keep building strength, agility, and mental toughness.
    • Game-based drills. Kids get a full workout that feels like play.
    • Character and technique. Our instructors coach both, so kids grow as people and as martial artists.
    • Adults too. Our Adults program focuses on fitness, self-defense, and stress relief, so parents can stay active right alongside their kids.

This is more than a martial arts school. It's a village. And the confidence your child builds on our mats follows them to the playground, the classroom, and beyond.
